I need SG-1 season 9 and 10 savvy people. Urgently. Seriously. Please. HELP.



Vala and Tomin - are they still married? Was it a marriage out of love? Or just out of necessity on her part? Meaning - was it a real marriage? Did she ever mention him after she returned to SG-1?

How does she approach marriages? Something to be honoured or something that just happens along the way?
With Tomin acting the way he does now, as an Ori follower, would she still have reasons to be loyal to him? Would that count as a divorce?
Or was the whole marriage more of a brother and sister thing, just to save herself, to provide a cover?

They made her sort of like him to make it less like having to whore herself out to save her life, so it was real affection when it suited the plot. Of course she never mentioned him, but then do they ever.

She is not loyal to him, but she tried to win him over by playing the what-we-had card.

So, when she told Cam's friend in that highschool reunion episode that she was married, it was just to get him off her back, and not a serious thought of honouring that marriage?

Well, you know how the SG writers do bring up old facts when it's suitable, which it seemed to be here, yet otherwise ignore them. Vala is still chasing Daniel and certainly not considering herself married in the sense that you might.

The main question behind this is: Would she do more than flirt with a guy - no big love affair involved, just, you know, acting on mutual attraction? I don't want to write a story in which there is cheating on a partner involved, since that kind of thing bothers me, and, really, that throwaway line in the episode made my brain go POOF, gah, no, you fuckers DIDN'T.

She said she was married lots in canon. But it's Vala so how many of them were real marriages and/or how many of them she entered into without ulterior motive is hard to tell.

She was chasing him ever since they first met a few seasons ago, and I was quite happy when they finally simmered that down recently and paired her with Sam or Cam. But yes, really, he's the one she wants.
Yes. Didn't you see any of those episodes? Her in the skimpy red underwear trying again and again to seduce him?
She'd definitely have sex without love.
And sadly, yes. She is painted as the harlot in the show, which is why she can be quasi forced into sex to save her own life.

I fear I just destroyed your fic *sad smile* but that's her character and why I was annoyed that they could do certain stuff with her, and why people love to pair her because she's written as easy, ready to fuck anybody.

For a marriage is sucks, she has been said to have long term relationships with other guys in order to gain something, she hasn't gone looking for her husband or exhibited any particular worry that he is left with the Ori ... and as I said, gaining a divorce when he is nowhere around? Hard. Not to mention whether his world has divorce etc.

This really, really bothers me.
Then again, if she was married before, then who says she's not already a bigamist? Who tells me she even got divorced during her other marriages? Oh, CRAP. *headdesks hard*

I think Vala genuinely liked the last husband, but I think that was pretty much over for her when he hit her. She may still hold affection for him, so much so that she feels he's an actual reason not to cheat sometimes, or feels she's doing his memory an honor to use him not to have sex when it would be a Very Bad Idea.

Yes. The moment he hit her was what I would have considered the end as well, if not for that damn line in the previous episode. But, thanks for reinforcing my first reaction.

There's no specific canon, but I can see it being easily integratable with what happened. Vala was basically a heretic.

Heeeeh. That icon is very fitting.
And, well, the reason I was having this minor freak-out was that during Jenn's fic-squick post so many people mentioned cheating on a partner as a major turn-off. So, while I didn't really see this as cheating on a partner, since there never was that kind of a relationship between them, at least not from Vala's side, I just wanted to test the waters and make sure I found an explanation that would work.
Which I now have.

To be honest, I really think partner betrayal squick has deep roots in it breaking up an OTP, that's where you'll find the biggest problems. After that, if you have a plausible characterization and/or reasoning, then I don't think most people will have a problem.

I think Vala cared about Tomin, and not just for the "I need to save myself." In many regards she wanted to save him from the Ori and everything else. And I thought she mentioned him quite a few times over the course of SG-1, or at least every now and then. I somehow got the impression that she really did care about him and like her daughter, she wants to save Tomin because deep down she knows he's a good man. And during the "Bounty" episode, there was talk of her being married and she rejected another guy's advance. I have conflicting feelings about this: I'm not entirely sure if she said it because she felt a need to preserve the vows of her marriage or if she did it because she knew that was Cameron's friend and she didn't want to just play him along since she'd sort of become part of his family, what with his parents liking her so much. And of course, the SG-1 family. Perhaps it was a little of both?
