The episode that was plotty and cool and had pretty new clothes for John and made me gasp out a "holy shit" that was all plot related twice, and would have been almost pretty damn perfect if it hadn't been for John's last line.

I might think differently about it tomorrow, but for now, it just annoys me that this writer couldn't acknowledge the team-love completely. The talk with Teyla was excellent, so why ruin it?

Maybe I'm just cranky because my eyes hurt so damn much. Watching the show with one eye closed is considerably less fun than watching with both, pain-free eyes open.
If anybody has a better reading of John's line, I'm all ears (if no eyes). I do really want a less grumpy reading of it, but I may need assistance.

Perhaps John said this because he cares for Rodney (and does his best not to show it). Or maybe he's teasing Teyla who knows he cares.

There's no other reading for it, really, because he has already done the "I'll save you or die trying" thing for him in Allies.

Not only Allies, but Grace Under Pressure which is the first John saving a single main character episode predating Sateda, The Real World, and The Ark. Also Rodney's line in Aurora about how he and John take turns saving each other's lives.

Actually, John risking his life to save his teammates is not the main thing I use to judge how important he considers his various teammates. John doing something that involves feelings and emotions, things I believe he is very uncomfortable with, are the main things I use.

I wasn't referring to John saving in team-member when I didn't understand the Allies connection, however. John would do anything for anyone of his team-members, we even have that spoken out loud and in canon (my heart still flutters). No, what I didn't get was the connection of John saving Rodney in Allies. And I have now pinpointed why I can't make the connection: It wasn't only about saving Rodney, there. It was about saving Rody and Ronon, who were both aboard the Hiveship. Your example of GuP is much more accurate in that regard.

I loved the last line. I saw it as John not being able to resist poking at Rodney, even when Rodney isn't in the room. It's that deeply ingrained. Because with John, it all comes down to Rodney. And the team is used to it. "Rodney this, Rodney that, I wouldn't marry rescue Rodney if he were the last man on Earth," yadda yadda and they just grin knowingly.

I second what [Unknown site tag] said. John likes making digs at Rodney.

I think the writer wanted a little McKay-Sheppard punchline at the end, which if you think about it, is a way of acknowledging the importance of Rodney to John. I mean, John brought up McKay's name when the talk was about him saving people. He could have left it as 'anyone one of you'. So yeah to me, what he said is the reverse of what he means.
