eretria: a cup of Assam (dark Atlantis)

This was the beginning of the magazine article:

"...Amanda Tapping and her character, Col. Samantha Carter, who'll be taking over as the new leader now that the TV series SG1 is coming to an end."

This, here, was said half a page down:

Cooper said "It's about time she [Carter] got a command, and we had to keep that from happening to SG1 because we wanted her to be part of the team."

Now, everyone assumes that Sam will be taking command of Atlantis, and everyone is crying that it'll be the end of the world. Now, while I agree that it wouldn't be the best choice, why aren't people thinking out of their boxes a little?

Magazine articles often make assumtions. The bit from Robert Cooper is ripped out of context. He didn't say that Sam would be in command of Atlantis. He just said she'd get a command. Wasn't it said earlier, in other spoilers, that there would be a new ship? Anybody thought of the option that Sam might command the ship, like Caldwell did with the Daedalus?

I really wished people would just trust TPTB a little. They made 10 freaking seasons of SG-1. They KNOW how to make decisions. Sure, not everybody will like them. But it would be so nice if people would take a step back and take a breather before they started screaming bloody murder and end of the world and Oh, I'll never watch the show again if they do that!.

Remember Darwin? "It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change."

So, really. Breathe. And think POSITIVE for a moment there.

I never freaked in the first place. & :-)

(Sure, that was because my heart was broken to pieces, put in a grinder, and rendered a fine powder by Joss in my first fandom, but hey.)

Seriously. Seriously. When I read comments that proclaim the show is in its death-season because of the changes that are about to be made, then, heck, I want to take people by their lapels and shake them.
Change is necessary. Change can be for the better. Sure, it doesn't have to be, but remember how people cried bloody murder and said that they wouldn't watch the show anymore because of that Ronon character coming on the show? How that was the worst decision in the history of EVAH, and that they'd stop watching and the world was going to end?
It just ... does not make me contemplative on Good Friday like I should be. It just makes me spitting mad.

I do avoid all public forums for that reason, and my SGA f-list is still fairly small. No one on mine does more than worry in some vague way...but yes, I've seen what you mean, and the blatant Sam-hate was stunning. Some people need therapy, stat.

Change is necessary. Change can be for the better.

Ronon's a good example, I think: He's much more popular than Ford ever was or would have been, presumably. (I thought he was cute, far cuter than Ronon, but he got no Story and no Love from the writers.)

And oh! Höchster Feiertag! Hope you are celebrating it in the manner you deem appropriate. & :-)

I agree completely. Maybe it's because I'm not as involved with the show as the rest of fandom, but I think it's a bit early to be proclaiming that the show is ruined forever and ever just because Sam *might* be taking control of Atlantis. I guess I don't even think it would be that terrible if she did. When Elizabeth was the leader, she was barely even in the episodes. Why would it be any different for Sam?

I've been contemplating on making an opinion post on the whole "Sam in Atlantis" kerfuffle and how people think it's going to change the show for the worse and how it'll make Rodney an idiot around Sam. Seriously. Rodney lusts after Sam, yes, but he's grown as a character since 48 Hours, Redemption and Grace Under Pressure and while he may be all moony over Sam, I don't think it's going to take away from the snark of his relationship/whatever with John, Radek, or whoever else for that matter.

grr.

THANK YOU.
Plus, Sam, I think, has seriously grown to like Rodney in a grudging way. She wouldn allow him to be an idiot around her. Plus, Rodney'd be way too competetive to be one.
I don't get why people always have to see the negative side of change. There's a lot of John and Rodney complaining about/ snarking at/ impressing / amusing / plotting against Sam possible.

That's very true--John and Rodney are never more entertaining than when there's a woman around. Somehow, it just ends up making them even gayer. *g*

Isn't that last year's news? AAMOF, I know it is, just slightly different, but all warmed up. I already wanted to be the uncharactaristic voice of reason last night, when you found the other recent wank, but seeing as it's even your highest holiday - why don't you just ignore it. Really. Do yourself a favour.

I didn't get worried or freaked out either, but this is SG fandom and I recall them doing the same thing when Daniel left the first time.

I really like Sam and if Sam were to be in regular contact with Atlantis, it wouldn't be bad. If anything, it would lead to there (hopefully) being more Mckay/Carter *g*.

It seemed pretty clear to me that she's replacing Weir as commander of the expedition, but that actually made me very happy because I did not want her going off on missions with the team. I figure as leader she'll stay in the city, and only have a minor role, maybe even smaller than TH did since she isn't appearing in every ep. I'll still miss Weir, but I'll freely admit I watch for John and Rodney.

Still not particularly thrilled with the changes, though. My expectations are low with JM as show runner, so it won't take much to pleasantly surprise me.

Yes, exactly! I was so glad to hear that she'll get the command because so far that has always been more of a supporting role. (After all, that was the reason why Jack was promoted.) The action is where the team is and I don't think that will change.

yesyes, still hoping. but. *lower lip wobbles* there will be no Elizabeth, and for that, i will cry. because they did nothing with her character, and then suddenly made her shine brightly for a minute before making her go away FOREVER. andandyes. there was so much potential there! and sga needs more women. and teyla's not my type. :(

I'm kind of meh about the spoilers because I'm not surprised that in the end they got rid of Weir. I'm not thrilled and I won't lie that this has dampened my renewed enthusiasm for the show but I'm still taking a 'wait and see' approach.

Spoilers are spoilers and as by nature are inaccurate, blurry, out of context and rarely if ever, right. Not to mention that the show cannot stay static forever and ever amen otherwise there will be no movement just a repeat after repeat after repeat of the same episode. If you want new stuff and *gasp* story arcs then there have to be changes. Personally, I'd not want that. Boring.

Although, to believe these changes off spoilers wholeheartedly... is ridiculous and idiotic.
