It's amazing they could do that so quickly, practically overnight. And horrifying that they did. So many families and friends split up. So much pain. *shakes head*

Thanks for posting about this- it's such an important day in my work as a modern historian, but even more as a human being.

The husband and I are learning German, (him for fun, me for school), and this was one of the first historical phrases he leapt on as worth knowing.
